USS Portland made many port calls in Gulf Region during the first half of 2021. She has teamed-up with the USNS Pecos [T-AO 197] for replenishments at Sea and exercised with other ships within the 5th Fleet.
Portland received a Laser Weapon System Demonstrator for indefinite testing. This laser weapon is the Navy's most advanced and powerful. It is also much more powerful than the 30-kilowatt AN/SEQ-3 LaWS which was fitted to the USS Ponce in 2018
The Navy can use the laser system in the Middle East as a valuable tool. Although it is more effective than standard AA guns in the destruction of targets, it must be used in a controlled and safe manner.

The ship was sent to the Gulf of Aden in early 2020 to show the weapon. The Navy can evaluate its performance in a hazardous environment and also give the Navy the chance to enhance its capabilities.
The Portland left its homeport March 4, 2019, for routine training off California's southern coast. Anchored in Coronado's Anchorage 171 and Moored At Bravo Pier, Naval Air Station North Island, for a quick stop to load equipment on April 2.; Moodered at Navy Fuel Farm Naval Base Point Loma to refuel, before mooring at Berth 2, Pier 8 April 5.
Following this deployment, the Portland returned to its homeport of San Diego. She had undergone a number of repairs and modifications to prepare for her deployment, including a $19 million modification to previously awarded contract.
During her deployment, Portland performed numerous amphibious landslides, including a Combined Amphibious Task Force Exercise, in the Arabian Gulf, and a joint amphibious landing Exercise, in Kuwait. Her crew supported these missions by performing a wide range of tasks. She also partnered with 5th Fleet vessels.

In addition, the Portland's crews conducted maritime security missions off the coast of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, where they worked with other 5th Fleet units to combat terrorism and protect vital shipping infrastructure. They also took part in bilateral maritime exercises including Indigo Defender 21 with the Kingdom Saudi Arabia.
The ship also conducted various exercises and training with allies, including Canada, Australia and Great Britain. Portland's crews offered crucial support and training to their allied partner during these engagements.
Portland has taken part in emergency response events in India and the Pacific Oceans, in addition to training and exercising. These activities have been invaluable in providing relief supplies and assistance to these peoples, as well as supporting local economies. This has allowed America to strengthen its ties with these countries, as well as increase the chance of peace and stability for the future.
