Scott Joplin is most well-known for his piano rag, "Maple Leaf Rag." The rag was printed in St. Louis and Sedalia, Missouri, and became the first piano rag to sell a million copies. Although the timing of this milestone is not known, it was an important step in the musical career. The cover of this rag was inspired from a tobacco advertisement sketch. It featured several famous vaudeville actors dancing. In the early 1900s, the cover was changed to the more familiar Maple Leaf. The dedication continued, however, because the rag's lower left-hand page featured a picture of Joplin.

Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry is a well-known singer and songwriter. His songs combine narrative country, folk tradition and jump jazz. He was a Billboard top-charter-topper in 1950s and made it onto the cover of the "Biggest Show of Stars", 1957.

Scott Joplin’s ragtime

Scott Joplin is closely tied to the promotion and creation of ragtime musical instruments. In 1976, the National Historic Landmark designation was granted to his house by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. It is the first state historic location dedicated to African American history. You will find many exhibits about the area's history and local neighborhood at the ragtime location. Visitors can also hear ragtime music on a player piano. The home features gas lights, calcimine paint and is decorated in Joplin's style.

Scott Joplin, a legend of American jazz music, is Scott Joplin. Some of his most popular jazz rags include "The Entertainer", written in 1903. Joplin's fluid, poetic genius was evident in The Entertainer. This style was very challenging to piano players of the time. Joplin was also well-known for his rags. These were songs that were named after flowers. The "Chrysanthemum Rag", as well as the "Rose Leaf Rag", are some of his most beloved rags.
