South Korea's KF-21 fighter jet was recently tested for flight. This new 4.5-generation fighter jet is comparable to China's J-10CE. The aircraft could also be sold in Southeast Asian markets. It is expected that the KF-21 will enter service in 2032, after its first flight test.

South Korea's first test flight of a fighter jet made at home was completed

South Korea Aerospace Industries completed the first flight of its new fighter plane. The KF-21 is the replacement for South Korea's aging fighter aircraft fleet. It was designed to be a more affordable alternative to the F-35 Lightning II stealth plane developed by the U.S. It is the first homegrown fighter jet to complete a test flight and will join an elite group of seven aircraft developed by several countries.

It is a 4.5 generation aircraft

The KF-21 is a South Korean fighter jet that is being touted as a cheaper alternative to the Lockheed Martin F-35. Although it is not as stealthy and agile as the F-35 the KF-21 makes a significant investment into South Korean independence. The Korean Air Force hopes to be able to fly the aircraft in service by 2026. There have been many obstacles in the program's path, including Washington's refusal of sharing key technology patents. The KF-21 program is currently scheduled to go through at least four years of testing before mass production begins. Before mass production can begin, the aircraft will be tested for at least 4 years. The KF-21 enters service with South Korean Air Force in 2026. The Boramae fighter also known by the KF-21 is a fifth-generation fighter.

It will rival China's J-10CE

China's Chengdu J-10 fourth-generation multirole combat airplane is now available. Introduced in 2005, the J-10 is a single-engine aircraft with advanced avionics, a laser-guided infrared seeker, and powerful weapons. The aircraft's capabilities may make it a contender for the KF-21.

It could also be sold to Southeast Asian nations

An Indonesian order for 50 KF-21 fighter aircraft has major implications for Southeast Asia's balance of military airpower. The aircraft will be equipped wit advanced air-to–air missiles as well as ground munitions. Although "arms races" is a popular term that draws more media attention and revenue for advertisers, a more detailed analysis of national weapons purchases will help to reveal more of the problems. For Indonesia, the major concerns are expanding territorial defense and reducing aircraft fleet obsolescence.

It will cost $7.9billion

The KF-21 is a multi-role fighter jet that has been developed in South Korea with Indonesia. Indonesia has contributed 20 percent to the construction of the fighter. Indonesia is expected to purchase 50 of the fighters in exchange. Indonesia has yet to pay the required payments. This has raised concerns about South Korea’s willingness to share vital military technology with Indonesia.

It will come with sixth-generation technology

The KF-21 will be a significant leap forward in combat capability and has many potential uses in the ROKAF as well as the export market. The proven F414-GE-414K U.S. General Electric engine will power the aircraft. This engine is also used on several aircraft types including the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and JAS 39E/F Gripen. The aircraft will be equipped with German-made IRIS-T long-range weapons and MBDA's Meteor primary aerial-to-air armament.
