What is Active Denial System, and what are its benefits?

Active Denial Systems (ADS) are directed energy non-lethal weapons systems that were developed by the United States Military. The system works by releasing a beam of millimeter waves, also known as "heat rays" that target people. When the beam strikes the target, it produces a scalding heat that causes a temporary burning sensation. This heating effect can be used to stop an individual engaging in hostile activities.

A denial system active can be mounted on ceilings, walls, and ships. They can be used for perimeter security or crowd control. It is intended to be non-lethal in defending military bases that have high-asset assets. It can also assist in law enforcement. However, some people feel that the technology can be misused or is too dangerous.

ADS uses millimeter waves at 95GHz to deliver a beam of light to a target. These waves penetrate to the skin at a depth up to 1/64th of an in. The energy stops if the subject moves from the beam. The beam can cause pain and blisters on the skin.

The technology is not new. However, Air Force Research Laboratory’s Human Effectiveness Directorate conducted the research and tested it. The Human Effects Advisory Panel analyzed the test results to determine that the risk for serious injury from ADS exposure is low.

The Active Denial System is tested against people who wear contact lenses, concrete blocks and alcohol. These tests were conducted in accordance with Federal regulations that regulate human research. The beam, unlike a gun, is not absorbed into metal and can therefore be used to target multiple targets. The system's head turn helps protect your eyes.

Although Active Denial System has been demonstrated to combat pirate attacks, it is unclear how it would function if used in a war situation. It could be used in a number of ways, including to protect military bases with high-assets from pirate attacks and to defend cargo ships and oil. At present, the military version is a vehicle-mounted weapon, while the civilian version is more portable.

The Air Force has been studying Active Denial Systems' effects since the late 80s. Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program is an organization that works to improve the lives and well-being of servicemen. It has supported the development of Active Denial Technology. The Human Effectiveness Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory has been conducting safe laboratory testing for years as part of this effort.

The History Channel's Modern Marvels and CBS 60 Minutes have featured Active Denial technology. It is also featured as part of the Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series. But, the government was reluctant to use Active Denial in a war scenario. The United States instead uses 'less deadly' weapons on a regular basis.

Active denial systems are designed for attackers to have additional time to decide. As a result, the beam has a reversible effect at short and long distances.
