South Korea just flew the KF-21 fighter jet in its first test flight. This new 4.5-generation fighter jet is comparable to China's J-10CE. The aircraft could also be sold in Southeast Asian markets. The KF-21's first test flight took place last month and it is expected to go into service in 2032.

South Korea's fighter jet was successfully tested in its first flight

South Korea Aerospace Industries completed the first flight of its new fighter plane. The KF-21 is the replacement for South Korea's aging fighter aircraft fleet. It was designed to be a more affordable alternative to the F-35 Lightning II stealth plane developed by the U.S. It is the first homegrown fighter jet to complete a test flight and will join an elite group of seven aircraft developed by several countries.

It is a 4.5-generation aircraft

The KF-21 South Korean fighter jet is being marketed as an affordable alternative to the Lockheed Martin F-35. While the KF-21 may not be as agile or stealthy as the F-35 it still represents a major investment in South Korean independence. The Korean Air Force hopes that the aircraft will be in service by 2026. The program faced numerous obstacles, including Washington's refusal for key technology patents to be shared. The KF-21 program currently needs to undergo at least four more years of testing before mass-production can begin. Before mass production can begin, the aircraft will be tested for at least 4 years. In 2026, the KF-21 will be in service with South Korea's Air Force. The Boramae fighter is also known as KF-21. It is a fighter of 4.5th generation.

It will challenge China's J-10CE

China's Chengdu J-10 multi-role combat aircraft is the fourth generation. Introduced in 2005, the J-10 is a single-engine aircraft with advanced avionics, a laser-guided infrared seeker, and powerful weapons. The aircraft's capabilities will make it a potential rival for the KF-21.

It could be sold to Southeast Asian countries

The Indonesian purchase of 50 KF-21 fighters jets is likely to have significant consequences for the balance in military air power in Southeast Asia. These aircraft will come equipped with advanced air–to-air missiles, and ground munitions. While the use of the phrase "arms-race" to describe the acquisition or modification of weapons is popular, and draws more media coverage and advertising revenues, a more comprehensive analysis of national weapon acquisitions can shed light on the complex issues. The main concerns for Indonesia are expanding territorial defense and decreasing aircraft fleet obsolescence.

It will cost $7.9 Billion

The KF-21 multirole fighter plane is being built in South Korea and Indonesia. Indonesia is contributing 20 percent of the cost of developing the fighter. In return, Indonesia plans to buy 50 examples. But, Indonesia has not paid its dues. This has raised concerns about South Korea’s willingness to share vital military technology with Indonesia.

It will feature sixth-generation technology

The KF-21 will be a significant leap forward in combat capability and has many potential uses in the ROKAF as well as the export market. The proven F414 GE-400K U.S. General Electric F414 engine, which is also used in multiple aircraft types such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet or JAS 39E/F Gripen, will be used to power the aircraft. The aircraft will also include German-made IRIS-T short-range guns and MBDA Meteor primary, air-to-air armament.
