It is now the state's first state historic site dedicated to African American heritage. The ragtime museum is full of exhibits that show the history of the area and its surrounding neighborhood. Visitors can also hear ragtime piano rolls on a working player piano. The home features gas lights, calcimine paint and is decorated in Joplin's style.

Joplin's fluid, poetic genius was evident in The Entertainer. This style was very challenging for piano players of the day. Joplin is also remembered for his rags. These gentle songs were named after flowers. The "Chrysanthemum Rag," and the "Rose Leaf Rag" were two of his finest rags.
