The United States military operations of today are a critical component of its national security strategy. They are designed to maintain our nation's advantage in the global arena as we compete for great power status and protect the homeland, our allies and our citizens around the world.
Our conflicts and wars are the result a variety of strategic, political, and economic choices. These decisions are often more complex than simply a foe firing a missile or starting a warship. They can also occur when the United States responds to an unexpected disaster or a natural disaster, conducts a noncombattant evacuation operation, or defends our homeland against Russian aggressory.
We have fought five formally declared wars and numerous other forms of military engagement authorized by Congress or United Nations Security Council Resolutions. Other types of military engagements include international humanitarian aid, counter-drug and anti-terrorism missions, and peacekeeping operations.
