In general, there are several components to the Department of Defense. Each of the three branches of the Department have their own bureaus. The Department of Defense is also responsible research and development as well as military training and personnel management. Last but not least, the Department of Defense coordinates military's global activities.
In addition to the Department of Defense, there are several federal agencies, including the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Other agencies include Department of Energy. Department of Defense Accountability Office. Department of Defense inspector General. And the Defense Science Agency. Among the various departments within the Department of Defense are the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology, and the Department of Defense Institute for Security Governance. Other agencies include the Office of the Secretary of Defense as well as the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense For Strategic Concepts. The Department of Defense keeps a vast inventory of assets. This includes the total aircraft inventory, the number and personnel of aircraft and personnel within the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as the military personnel within the various branches.
