The T-14 Armata - The Next Generation Russian Main Battle Tank

latest news on china military technology

The T-14 Armata Russian main combat tank is the next-generation. It is based upon the Armata Universal Combat Platform. Continue reading to learn more about the tank. Its cost, protection, and the rumors about its replacement. This article will provide you with the information you need to decide if this is the right tank for you.

Russian main battle tank

The Russian main battle tank T-14 Armata is hailed as a game changer. The tank was shown for the first times at Moscow's Victory Day parade. It was noted for its exceptional capabilities. But the Armata did not appear on the battlefields in Ukraine. Why is that?

Armata is a high tech vehicle that features advanced sensors, automation and an active safety system. The Armata is expected be in production at least for five years. The Russian army plans on purchasing 2,300 Armatas by 2020.

Prices

T-14 Armata MBTs are approximately $812 million in cost. The T-14 Armata MBT has been in development since 2014. A batch of them was ordered by the Russian Ministry of Defence in 2017. Delivery was originally planned to begin in 2018, however, delivery has been delayed due a variety of technical and funding issues. Therefore, deliveries are expected to start for the Russian Army in 2019/2020.

Armata's performance, cost and reliability are comparable to MBTs of today. However, the main concern is the cost. According to some sources the Armata might cost up three times as much than a fully-upgraded T-72. Although the Armata isn’t as costly than the K2 Black Panther it will still put a strain upon Russia’s modest defense budget.

Protection levels

T-14 Armata has less armor than modern tanks. Its weakest point is the hull Bow, where crew members can be positioned. Although its armor is comparatively low, active armor protection systems are able to compensate for this weakness. If the tank is struck, it may be affected by the weak armor of the turret. The tank's middle, where the bulk of the flammable ammunition is kept, is another weak point.

T-14 comes equipped with advanced composite armor. But the T-14's unique active protection system is what sets it apart. Its Afganit AAPS is capable to intercept both chemical as well as kinetic rounds. However, the T-14's APS isn't the only thing that stands out.

Rumours about its replacement

Rumours circulating that Russia's military isn't planning to replace T-14 Armata by a newer tank are not surprising. Russian military officials have had the difficult task of prioritizing other projects and cutting defense budgets. The Armata cost twice as high as originally expected. In the interim, the Armata could be replaced by the Abrams. This could be able to compete with the Leopard 2 (and Challenger 2) 2.

The T-14 Armata tanks have made quite a splash within the armor and mobility world. Its range is almost seven miles, nearly double that of the M1 Abrams. Its armor and speed have earned it a lot of praise, but there are some questions.

Future upgrades

Future upgrades to the T-14 Armata tanks remain unknown. However, the Russian military purchased over 600 T-72B3s in recent decades. These vehicles could be used to provide safety nets for T-14. They suggest Russia will continue to operate a mixed battle tank fleet for years to come.

Future upgrades of T-14 Armata vehicles should increase armor and protection levels. This vehicle will also have dual-manual weapon control and shielding systems for its electronics. These upgrades would also help improve the vehicle’s ergonomics.
