German Navy

A German Navy sailor took a walkthrough video of the U34 submarine, a Type 212A air-independent-propulsion submarine, during the German-sponsored exercise Northern Coasts 2016. The U34 is an advanced non-nuclear submarine capable of staying submerged for three weeks without resurfacing. The U34 uses Siemens-developed compressed hydrogen fuel cells and proton exchange membranes to power its propulsion system.

The Type 212 submarine, the latest non-nuclear submarine to join the fleet of the German Navy, is now available. Developed in Kiel, this submarine has air-independent propulsion powered by hydrogen fuel cells. It's said to have a low sound signature and can keep submerged for up 3 weeks without ever surfacing. It also features a unique "X" configuration to track planes and perform special operations.
