Peresvet - A New Russian Laser Weapon

faa drone zone

Peresvet (a Russian laser weapon) is a brand new weapon. It was named after Alexander Peresvet, a medieval Orthodox monk and soldier who died fighting against Temir-murza, a Mongol champion.

The weapon is expected to be used by the Russian air force in an effort to counter a wide range of threats. It's a point defense system that can track, shoot down, and even destroy satellites and aircraft.

It is also expected to "blind" sophisticated enemy systems, preventing them from operating. It is designed to work in conjunction with optical telescopes and space surveillance radars throughout the country, forwarding data for Peresvet laser combat troops.

Russia has created a fully-functional ground-based version for the first time ever of a laser system capable in blinding and dazzling satellites. It will work in close collaboration with the Kalina satellite dazzler and Sokol Eshelon systems. These systems have been in production for many years.

what is a drone

Although there are many theories as to what the weapon will be used for, the primary goal of any laser weapon is likely to be to disable or destroy any target sensor. This is not the only use of lasers, but it is most common.

A laser can not only destroy the satellite's sensors but also blind them to stop their communication or camera functioning. This makes them an ideal tool for denying access to the space environment by any hostile party.

Also, it is believed that the Peresvet may be used against enemy aircraft. This would allow the Russian air force to have more lethal options against various types of aircraft, including the MiG-29 and F-22 made by the US.

Vladimir Putin first announced Peresvet in 2018. It will be an aerial-defence system which can track and destroy drones, missiles, or other aircraft.

The exact weapon remains a mystery but it has been seen on a special wheeled platform. The same chassis is used to transport many other artillery/missile vehicles.

The vehicle was discovered near Sibirskiy in Russia's Altai region. YouTube uploaded a video showing the Peresvet or "overexposure" laser weapon slowly emerging behind a barrier.

Also, the Peresvet can fire multiple laser beams simultaneously and debris is also seen being launched from its weapon. Despite this, there are doubts that the Peresvet will have any real capability as an anti-aircraft weapon.

However, this is a promising start for Russia to develop a highly-effective laser system that can be used to defend against air-to-air missiles and other weapons. It will be an important asset in any Russian military campaign and will protect Russia against air to-air attacks.

This is a very interesting development and should be studied closely. This weapon will most likely be in service when the next round begins in 2022.
